Dear Doc, I have recently purchased a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 TD and it will not turn over of a morning. I picked the car up on Saturday afternoon and all was fine. Drove about 15 miles parked the car; came out later that evening and it wouldn’t start. Charged the battery for the rest of the evening and then tried it again in the morning. Everythi...More

Dear Doc, Why would my diesel Golf lose power, knock and produce black smoke when driving along? Keith Holden.

Hi Doc, There is currently a large amount of publicity regarding the environmental benefits of correctly inflated tyres. At the correct pressure, a tyre will present less rolling resistance and require less energy to move it, thereby saving fuel and also reducing emissions, as well as ensuring the stability, safe handling and effective braking of ...More

Dear Doc, Ukranian users of Kia cars equipped with the 1.6CRDi engines (D4FB) have some serious troubles with oil-pump pressure. Many Cerato 1.6 CRDi owners told me that when they are started up, their cars show there is NO OIL PRESSURE IN ENGINE. The low-oil-pressure-sensing element is on during the first 2-4 seconds when the engine has started...More

Dear Doc, My garage tells me that using cruise control is not a good economy choice. They say that I will be able to control the engine revs better with my foot on the accelerator. I thought that keeping an even speed using cruise control would be beneficial. Please advise with your usual good humour. Marcus.

Dear Doc, I purchased a brand new Kia cee’d 1.6 CRDi LS on the 4th June this year and have now covered approximately 3,700 miles. I am very happy with the car, which has so far performed brilliantly, but there is one matter which has been niggling me since delivery – namely a “droning noise” whenever the car is moving. I would describe it as sou...More

I own a 2002 Toyota Corolla 2.0 D-4D, which ran perfectly until it got a bit cold the autumn before last. It takes an awfully long time for it drop down to normal idle revs of around 800 900rpm. It stays up at 1,000- 1,100rpm for about ten to fifteen minutes. I have taken it to my local Toyota dealer, which can find nothing wrong when it is put on ...More

Dear Doc, I have a Peugeot 206 which is in need of two new front tyres, since it has now covered 25,000 miles. Normally, I would use the spare in the boot, but as you probably know, Peugeot fits the tiny width space-saver wheels to its cars. The rear tyres are hardly worn, so is it best to put the new tyres on the front, or bring the part-worn o...More

Dear Doc, I’ve just bought a new Vauxhall Astra 1.3 CDTi, and the salesman said that the car doesn’t need an oil change until it has reached 20,000 miles. That seems like an extraordinarily long time, so I checked the What Diesel Car? Diesel Files, and it concurs. Should I leave the car that long between oil changes, or should I change it soon...More
